At this point the system works as intended. The buttons on the steering wheel are used as input for centrafuse (the multimedia system) on my CarPC. For the PC it’s nothing else than a standard HID keyboard.
Now I’m rewriting the project progress and documentation, as there are notes all over the place.
Final thought for now: It’s a far simpler mod than I guessed. There’s only a couple of traps waiting…
One of the last major problems I had, was the power on delay of the amplifier. After starting my car, the amp got powered immediately, and the pc would boot. This was a bad situation as while the x-fi driver was being loaded there were nasty thumps on the speakers. The final solution is based on the com-port, a windows service pulling DTR high after booting, a NPN transistor, a diode, two resistors and a protection fuse. So basically the amplifier now gets the enable signal of a slightly abused serial port. This works great. The schematic:
